Terms of Use

Effective from 28 July 2026

These Terms of Use explain how you may use Focal, including workouts, outdoor activities, nutrition, In Focus podcasts, social features, Challenges, community guidelines, Apple Health or Health Connect, subscriptions and account deletion.

1. Who we are

Focal is operated by Aqil Rouf, based in England, United Kingdom. In these terms, "we", "us" and "our" mean Aqil Rouf as operator of Focal.

You can contact us about these terms at hello@joinfocal.app.

2. Accepting these terms

By creating an account, signing in, downloading the app, starting a workout, logging nutrition, joining social features, joining a Challenge, or using any paid feature, you agree to these Terms of Use.

If you do not agree to these terms, do not use the app. If you use the app on behalf of someone else, such as a coaching client or business, you confirm that you have authority to accept these terms for them.

3. What the app provides

Focal is a fitness application that may include features such as workout logging, outdoor activity tracking, nutrition tracking, progress monitoring, coaching tools, community features, Challenges, and In Focus articles with optional podcast playback. Features may change over time.

The app may connect with Apple Health or Health Connect, use device permissions for optional features, continue outdoor GPS tracking and podcast audio while the app is locked or in the background when you use those features, and offer free or paid subscription tiers. Specific capabilities, limits and integrations may vary by version, platform and account type.

4. Accounts and eligibility

You must be at least 13 years old to use the app. The app is not intended for children under 13. If we learn that an account belongs to someone under 13, we may close the account and delete related data where appropriate.

You are responsible for keeping your account secure and for activity that happens through your account. Authentication is provided through a third-party authentication provider and may include email sign-in, Sign in with Apple and Google sign-in where available.

You must provide accurate account information and keep it up to date. Do not use another person's account, impersonate someone, or create an account for a person without their permission.

5. Health and fitness disclaimer

Focal is provided for informational purposes only and does not provide medical advice. Always consult a qualified healthcare professional before beginning a new exercise or nutrition programme. You use the app at your own risk.

Focal is a fitness, nutrition and training log. It is not a medical device, healthcare provider, diagnostic tool, treatment service, or emergency service. It does not replace advice from a doctor, dietitian, physiotherapist, coach or other qualified professional.

  • Speak to a qualified professional before starting a new fitness programme, changing your diet, training while injured, training during pregnancy, or relying on any recovery or readiness information.
  • Stop exercising and seek medical help if you feel pain, dizziness, faintness, chest pain, shortness of breath or any other concerning symptom.
  • The app may show readiness, calorie, macro, training, cycle and nutrition information, but those features are estimates and may be incomplete or inaccurate.
  • You are responsible for deciding whether any workout, programme, food choice, Step Battle, Challenge, target, or recommendation is appropriate for you.
  • Rehab and recovery exercise catalogues are educational logging aids only. They do not diagnose injury, prescribe treatment, or replace physiotherapy or other medical care.

6. Health data and device permissions

On iPhone, if you choose to connect Apple Health, the app may read steps, active energy, activity summaries, workouts, resting heart rate, heart rate variability, sleep and water, and may write strength workouts, check-in body weight and water. You control Apple Health permissions in iOS and in the Apple Health app.

On Android, if you choose to connect Health Connect, the app may read and write the same kinds of movement, recovery, sleep, workout, water and body weight data where you grant permission. You control Health Connect permissions in the Health Connect app and Android settings.

The app must not write false or inaccurate data to Apple Health or Health Connect. You are responsible for checking the data you save. The app does not use HealthKit or Health Connect data for advertising, marketing, or use-based data mining, and does not sell that health data.

Camera, photo, microphone, speech recognition, location, activity or motion access, and notification permissions are optional and are requested for specific features, such as meal scanning, barcode scanning, food label scanning, menu scanning, profile photos, meal dictation, gym discovery, outdoor activity tracking, background location while an outdoor activity is active, background audio for In Focus podcast playback, workout sharing and push notifications.

7. AI and third-party content

Some exercise, nutrition, recipe, planner, feedback and media features use AI generated or AI assisted content. This may include exercise overviews, instructions, coaching tips, icon illustrations, food lookup, meal photo interpretation, food label scanning, menu extraction, workout or programme planning, feedback copy polishing, typo correction and content enrichment.

AI content can be wrong, incomplete, outdated, or unsuitable for your circumstances. You should use your own judgement and seek professional advice where needed. You should not rely on AI output as medical, nutritional, safety, legal, or professional advice.

The app may show third-party video embeds, map results or route maps, third-party recipe references, food data, exercise catalogue data and external search results. We do not control third-party services and are not responsible for their availability, accuracy, content, policies, or terms.

8. User content and social features

You may create, upload, post, share, or submit content including usernames, profile photos, bios, goals, location or city, workouts, outdoor activities, route maps, comments, progress photos, meal photos, custom exercises, feedback board posts, bug reports, feature requests and shared workout images.

You keep ownership of your content. You grant us a limited, worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to host, store, reproduce, display, format and distribute your content only as needed to operate, improve, secure and provide the app. For public or shared content, this includes displaying it to other users according to your chosen visibility and feature settings.

Do not share content that you do not have rights to share. Do not post health, private, or personal information about another person without their permission.

9. Community guidelines

What these guidelines cover

These guidelines apply when you share workouts, photos, comments, reactions or other content that other people can see in Focal.

Be respectful

  • Do not post nudity, sexual content, or pornography.
  • Do not post violent, graphic, or gory images.
  • Do not harass, threaten, bully or target other people.
  • Do not post spam, scams, or misleading content.
  • Do not share someone else's photo without their consent.

Fitness photos are welcome

Shirtless gym selfies, progress photos and revealing gym wear are normal in a fitness app. These guidelines are aimed at explicit or abusive content, not ordinary training posts.

Profile and workout photos

Your profile photo can appear across feeds, comments, leaderboards and shared cards. When you upload a profile photo or save a public workout with a photo attached, we may automatically check that image for safety before other people see it.

Reporting and enforcement

You can report a workout or a person if something breaks these guidelines. We review reports and may hide content, make a workout private, or restrict accounts that break the rules repeatedly.

If you are unsure whether something belongs in a public post, keep it private or leave the photo off.

10. Acceptable use

  • Do not harass, bully, threaten, abuse, impersonate, defame, shame, or target another person.
  • Do not post illegal, hateful, sexually explicit, violent, exploitative, self-harm promoting, discriminatory, misleading, or unsafe content.
  • Do not use the app to promote dangerous training, eating disorders, unlawful substances, fraud, spam, scams, malware, or unauthorised advertising.
  • Do not scrape, reverse engineer, disrupt, overload, bypass security, misuse APIs, access another account, or interfere with the app.
  • Do not manipulate leaderboards, Step Battles, Challenges, referrals, subscriptions, analytics, feedback votes, workouts, or health data.
  • Do not upload content that infringes copyright, trade marks, privacy rights, publicity rights, or any other rights.

11. Challenges

Focal may offer Challenges, such as completion goals or leaderboards based on activity in the app. Challenges may award XP, prizes, or both. Features, rules and availability may change over time, and Challenges may be offered while still in beta.

When you join a Challenge, you also agree to any challenge-specific prize terms shown in the app for that Challenge. Those details sit alongside these Terms of Use. If there is a conflict about that Challenge's dates, eligibility, scoring, winners or prizes, the challenge-specific terms control for that Challenge.

  • Eligibility may be limited by factors shown in the app, such as age, location or other profile details you provide.
  • Progress and rankings are based on activity recorded in Focal during the challenge window. Some Challenges may use steps or other health data you choose to connect through Apple Health or Health Connect.
  • Joining or qualifying does not guarantee a prize. Winner selection follows the rules for that Challenge.
  • Prize details, claim steps and claim deadlines are set out in the challenge-specific terms. You may need to claim a prize in the app within a stated period.
  • We may withhold, cancel or reclaim prizes where activity looks abusive, automated, manipulated, or otherwise outside normal use.
  • If circumstances require, we may change a prize to another of equal value, cancel a Challenge, or adjust results to correct errors.
  • Because Challenges may be in beta, bugs, delays, sync issues or incorrect progress displays can happen while we refine the system.

12. Moderation, removal and termination

We may review, hide, remove, restrict, or delete content if we reasonably believe it breaks these terms, creates risk, violates law, infringes rights, or could harm the app or other users.

We may suspend or terminate accounts that abuse the service, violate these terms, misuse community features, attempt to interfere with the app, or commit serious or repeated breaches.

We may preserve information where reasonably required for safety, security, legal obligations, dispute handling, fraud prevention, or enforcement. We may report illegal or harmful activity to relevant authorities where appropriate.

13. Subscriptions, billing and paid features

The app may offer paid or subscription features, including Pro features. Purchases are handled by Apple through the App Store or by Google through Google Play, with a third-party subscription management provider used to manage subscription entitlement status inside the app.

  • Current planned product identifiers include pro_monthly and pro_annual.
  • The annual Pro subscription may include a 14-day free trial where shown in the App Store or Google Play purchase flow and the relevant store console.
  • Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each billing period unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period or trial, subject to the relevant store terms.
  • Your Apple Account or Google account is charged by that store. Prices, taxes, trial availability and renewal terms are shown by the store before purchase.
  • You can manage or cancel subscriptions in Apple Account subscription settings or Google Play subscription settings. Deleting your Focal account does not automatically cancel App Store or Google Play billing.
  • Refund requests are handled by Apple or Google according to that store’s policies and consumer rights that apply in your country or region.
  • Some Pro access may be granted through a founding member or referral programme. Referral codes, lifetime founding member access and Pro feature limits may change, close, or be withdrawn where allowed by law and store rules.
  • Free and Pro accounts may have different limits for AI food lookups, menu scanning, workout or programme planning, active programmes, trend analytics, adaptive coaching and progress photo comparison.

We may change, add, remove, or limit free and paid features over time. If a paid feature is materially changed, your rights are governed by these terms, store rules and any consumer laws that apply.

14. Feedback and ideas

If you submit feedback, feature requests, bug reports, roadmap comments, or ideas, you allow us to use them without payment or obligation. Public feedback board posts may be visible to other users.

15. Intellectual property

The app, brand, design, software, code, interfaces, databases, exercise catalogue structure, generated illustrations, copy, logos and other materials are owned by us or licensed to us, except for user content and third-party materials.

You may use the app only for personal, non-commercial use unless we agree otherwise in writing. You must not copy, sell, rent, sublicense, modify, distribute, or create derivative works from the app or its content except as allowed by law or by app features.

16. Account deletion

You can delete your account and data from inside the app. Deletion is permanent and starts straight away when you confirm it in the app. We will sign you out once deletion has started.

Deleting your account does not automatically cancel subscriptions managed by Apple or Google. You should cancel any active subscription separately in Apple Account or Google Play subscription settings.

17. Availability and changes to the app

We may modify, suspend or discontinue any part of the service at any time. We do not guarantee that the app will always be available, uninterrupted, error free, secure, or compatible with every device or operating system.

18. Liability

Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability where it would be unlawful to do so, including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud, fraudulent misrepresentation, or rights you have under consumer law.

The app is provided "as is" to the extent permitted by law. To the fullest extent allowed by law, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, punitive, business, data, profit, reputation, fitness, health, nutrition, training, or social losses arising from use of the app.

The app is provided for personal training support. You remain responsible for your training, outdoor activity routes, nutrition, health decisions, social sharing, and the accuracy of data you enter or choose to save to Apple Health or Health Connect.

19. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms from time to time. If changes are material, we will take reasonable steps to tell you in the app or by another appropriate method. The latest version will show the effective date. Continued use of Focal after changes become effective constitutes acceptance of the updated terms.

20. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. The courts of England and Wales will have jurisdiction, except where consumer law gives you rights to bring a claim elsewhere.

21. Contact

Questions about these terms can be sent to hello@joinfocal.app.
